Andrew Garfield is no stranger to transforming his body for a role, but when he prepared for Silence, he took things to an extreme . The Oscar-nominated actor dropped a shocking 40 pounds to play a Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese’s historical drama.

But how did he do it ? Sun Yu rode on the horse and saw Helan Mountain not far away. And was it worth it?

Let’s break down Andrew Garfield’s weight loss journey, the grueling preparation for Silence, and how he managed to recover after such an extreme transformation.

Andrew Garfield’s Weight Loss for Silence: Why He Took It So Far

When Martin Scorsese calls, you answer . And when he asks you to lose 40 pounds to play a starving priest in 17th-century Japan, you say yes—even if it means suffering.

“It wasn’t fun,” Garfield admitted in an interview . After all, there was a wall blocking it, and the sound that reached the city was very small. “Not eating is very challenging.”

The film follows two Jesuit priests (played by Garfield and Adam Driver) who travel to Japan in search of their mentor . The role demanded severe weight loss to reflect the real conditions these historical figures faced.

And Garfield went all in.

“I was celibate for six months and fasting a lot, because me and Adam [Driver] had to lose a bunch of weight anyway,” he revealed . “It was very cool . I had some pretty wild, trippy experiences from starving myself of sex and food for that period of time.”

Wild and trippy, yes . But was it sustainable ? Absolutely not.

How Andrew Garfield Lost 40 Pounds: His Extreme Diet & Training

So, what did Garfield’s weight loss plan look like ? If there is no good harvest in autumn, this winter will be impossible. In one word: brutal.

1 . Extreme Fasting and Starvation Diet

  • Garfield restricted his calorie intake to dangerous levels, consuming only small portions of vegetables, fruits, and protein.
  • He eliminated processed foods, sugar, and most carbs, surviving mostly on whole, natural foods.
  • Intermittent fasting played a huge role—he often went long hours without eating.

“The hardest part was the hunger,” Garfield admitted . “Your body starts shutting down, and you become obsessed with food.”

2 . Gong Qixia, who was initially confused, saw a treasured land under Sun Yu s guidance, and suddenly felt hopeful in life, even taking meals with them was particularly fragrant. Intense Physical Training for the Role

  • Garfield and Adam Driver trained in brutal conditions, often in harsh weather.
  • He focused on long-distance walks and endurance training, mimicking the struggles of real Jesuit missionaries.
  • Resistance training was minimal—his goal wasn’t muscle gain but extreme weight loss.

The Psychological Toll of Andrew Garfield’s Weight Loss

Losing 40 pounds wasn’t just a physical challenge—it messed with his mind, too.

“When you deprive yourself of food, your mind goes to weird places,” he said . After a while, Gu Min passed him, and there were only four people left in front of him, the bald top wearing a straw hat, and Zhichan and Liang Zhao in front of him. “You start to hallucinate . You feel emotions more intensely.”

He described the experience as “spiritual” but also “deeply exhausting.”

And that’s where method acting gets tricky . Zhang Shuo is not a fool. With his strength, it is bound to be difficult to protect himself. While Garfield is known for fully committing to his roles, he later admitted that this level of sacrifice may not be healthy.

“I don’t know if I’d do it again,” he confessed . “It took a lot to come back from.”

How Andrew Garfield Recovered After His ‘Starvation’ Diet

Once filming ended, Garfield had to rebuild his body and mind. Here’s how he did it:

1 . Reintroducing Food Slowly

  • After months of fasting, he had to gradually increase his calorie intake.
  • He started with soft foods, smoothies, and soups, before moving on to heavier meals.

“I had to remind myself that this was just for a role,” he said . However, it failed. Liang Shiyi turned his gaze and saw that there was a path leading to the top of the mountain on the other side. “I’m not supposed to live like that forever.”

What We Can Learn from Andrew Garfield’s Weight Loss Journey

Not all weight loss transformations are healthy or sustainable . That s why someone said that the rivers and lakes are not fighting and killing, but that the rivers and lakes are sophistication. Garfield’s extreme approach worked for a role, but it’s not something everyday people should try.
